Thank you for joining Memory Makers for our candle making workshop! We hope you had an amazing time. We've put together this blog to remind you of the steps to make the most out of your hand-poured candle.
The Cure
Get excited about candle curing! It's the magical time from when you pour your candle to when you light it for the first time.
Why is curing important?
Curing takes your candle to the next level! It enhances the scent throw, ensuring those fabulous essential oils fully bind to the natural wax, and gives you a superior burn quality with less tunnelling.
How long should I cure my candle for?
At Memory Makers, we use a coconut and rapeseed wax mix. We suggest curing your candle for at least 2 weeks for the ultimate experience.
Where should I put my candle to cure?
Find a cool, dark spot for your candle to cure. Avoid windowsills – your candle deserves the best!
Ready for the first burn?
Before lighting, trim the wick to about ¼ inch and keep it trimmed after each burn. Long, crooked, or mushroomed wicks can lead to uneven burning. Trimming wicks is key to extending your candle's life!
When you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the entire top surface to melt from wick to edge. This maximizes scent release and prevents tunnelling.
What is tunnelling?
Tunnelling happens when your candle burns straight down the centre, leaving a tunnel of melted wax surrounded by un-melted wax. This wastes wax and shortens your candle's life. Check out our Instagram reel to solve tunnelling issues!
Lighting time
Keep the burn time to 2 hours, but never go beyond 4 hours. Burning longer causes carbon build up on your wick, leading to 'mushrooming,' which can make the flame too large, cause smoking, and release soot.
Don’t burn unattended!
Be cautious! Keep hair and clothing away when lighting a candle. Ensure candles are out of reach of pets and children. Place them in a debris-free, flammable-material-free zone and avoid drafty areas.
The last burn
Don't burn your candle when there's less than ½ inch of wax left. Burning longer can overheat the bottom and pose a safety risk. Check out our Instagram reel on how to repurpose your candle containers!
We hope the fragrance of your candle brings back memories of your workshop experience every time it fills your home.
